Digital Averages 2003-2005

Works in this series are based on an idea that large amounts of media and data could possibly be reduced into representational composite-images that would offer an artificial moment of clarity and convey a new perspective about a scene or person. By looking at a group of similar photographs and aligning the subjects in the images, patterns will emerge. A computer algorithm, that is part of ImageMagick, was used to average together these groups of photos. A sample of the work in this series was shown at Penn State University in the Fall of 2004.

The development of this idea began in 2002 during a collaboration with new media student Jason Zulli. The idea back then was to create a portrait of student that is representative of a group of students; to make a group portrait but use only one image. Since then the idea has evolved and led to other explorations of the concept of visual brevity, including SAVE AS, an exhibition of spam, porn and art in 2006 in Brooklyn.
